Biografie

Jaap Pieper begon zijn carrière als assistent van Maria Austria, die hem drie jaar lang de kunst van de theaterfotografie tot in finesses bijbracht. Eenmaal werkzaam als zelfstandig fotograaf werkte hij voor het Holland Festival, het Holland Festival Oude Muziek, de Nationale Opera in Brussel en hij was de huisfotograaf van De Nederlandse Opera, waarvoor hij meer dan 125 producties heeft vastgelegd. Jaap Pieper werd 52 jaar.

Jaap Pieper heeft vooral naam gemaakt als operafotograaf, hij heeft jarenlang voor Stichting De Nederlandse Opera (DNO) gefotografeerd. Daarnaast heeft hij veel voorstellingen van het Holland Festival vastgelegd en enkele malen voor andere gezelschappen gewerkt, zoals de Stichting Theaterunie, Stichting Opera Zuid, Het Nationale Ballet en het Haarlems Toneel. Na zijn opleiding aan de school voor Fotografie en Fototechniek in Den Haag, is Pieper voor Maria Austria (Patricam Pictures) gaan werken. Dit deed hij samen met Bob van Dantzig. Samen fotografeerden ze voor het Holland Festival, wat ze ook na de dood van Austria bleven doen. Daarnaast richtte Pieper zich voornamelijk op de voorstellingen van DNO. Tot zijn overlijden in 1995 blijft Jaap Pieper actief in de theaterfotografie.

De opera is een redelijk conventioneel genre binnen de podiumkunsten. Het stelt dan ook bepaalde eisen aan de fotografie. De operafotografie is vrij conventioneel gebleven, waar andere vormen van theaterfotografie meer vrijheid hebben gekregen. Decor, kostuums en grime spelen doorgaans een belangrijke rol in de opera en moeten dan ook duidelijk op de foto’s verschijnen. Jaap Pieper maakt in zijn theaterfoto’s gebruik van een neutraal contrast, waardoor de zangers goed herkenbaar zijn en ook de kostuums, grime en decor goed tot hun recht komen. Hij maakt geen gebruik van extreme afsnijdingen, maar plaatst het onderwerp van de foto vaak centraal en ten voeten uit. Pieper fotografeert veelal vanuit de zaal. Er is een afstand tussen podium en fotograaf, wat wordt veroorzaakt door de orkestbak tussen hen in. In de foto’s is dit terug te zien in een overzichtelijke blik op het toneel en vaak een wat afstandelijk gevoel dat de foto’s in zich dragen. Soms neemt Pieper ook plaats op het zijbalkon, waardoor de blik van schuinboven op het toneel valt. Dit was ook een favoriete plek van Austria en Henk Jonker, die ook bij Particam Pictures heeft gefotografeerd. Het zijn vooral overzicht en mediumshots die Jaap Pieper heeft gemaakt van de opera’s, waardoor het grootse en bombastische van de opera goed gerepresenteerd wordt. Pieper maakt soms creatief gebruik van bewegingsonscherpte in zijn operafoto’s, maar meestal is de beweging compleet bevroren. In enkele gevallen doen zijn foto’s wat statisch aan, maar dit is inherent aan de soms statisch uitgevoerde opera’s. Verder vindt er weinig expriment in de foto’s plaats.

Dit is anders met de foto’s die Pieper voor het Holland Festival heeft gemaakt. Deze foto’s omvatten verschillende theatergenres, waaronder toneel tot dans. Vaak maakte hij de foto’s tijdens een voorstelling, en niet tijdens een (generale) repetitie, waardoor er ook publiek aanwezig is. Dit is een beperking tijdens het fotograferen. De fotograaf zit vast aan zijn plek en kan een voorstelling vaak niet een tweede maal fotograferen om meer materiaal te verkrijgen. De foto’s van het Holland Festival onderscheiden zich van de operafoto’s door een hoger contrast en meer donkere beelden. De foto’s tonen meer vrijheid van de conventionele regels van de theaterfotografie. Ook is er sprake van meer dynamiek in het beeld. Hij kan het toneel en de spelers dichter benaderen, al is er nog geen sprake van extreme close-ups.
