Vanuit een gezamenlijke belangstelling voor volksdans richt Ferdinand van Altena in 1961 samen met onder andere John Castelijn en Tony van Breda de folkloristische Dansgroep Terpsichoré op. In 1966 fuseert deze groep met de volksdansgroep van Gerard Bitter (Danstheater Internationaal) tot Het Folkloristisch Danstheater.
